Important Update For Blackberry Users

Blackberry users, we have important news we would like to share:

Effective June 30th, Seesmic will discontinue support for Blackberry in order to focus development efforts on our most popular mobile platforms: Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7.

We encourage those effected by this change to try out Twitter for Blackberry, UberSocial or Socialscope. Please also have a look at Seesmic’s additional mobile offerings.

Sincerely,

Team Seesmic

    Fuck BlackBerry.

if your happy with losing customers, sure. I’m out.

Blackberry has one foot in the grave as it is. Their “Playbook”, just like the Palm Pre, isn’t enough to save them. Just like Palm, they ignored the market around them and weren’t competitive with their mobile OS. It’s arrogance, is what it is. Blackberry thinks that because they’ve got a “brand” that they don’t have to compete. It’s only a matter of time before Blackberry goes the way of Palm.

I, for one, have no problem with our new android overlords. All hail the giant green robot!

This is how Seesmic handles “difficulties”? I’m seriously disappointed on you guys. “Most popular platforms”? really?. Count me out of your ecosphere. I’m no longer a Seesmic user. And if you call this an “overreaction” you should read your post.

    Agree with some of this.

The difference is in my opinion was Palm made WebOS really great, I just think they where to late, I can’t say the say about BlackBerry OS, its a mess.

    Seesmic had a BlackBerry app?

  • http://twitter.com/yousifabdullah Yousif Abdullah

Good riddance, I think. Needless to say, I gave up on Seesmic for BlackBerry a long time ago. The app was never updated to work with BlackBerry 6 properly (constant freezing issues and other flaws) and other than a pretty UI, it didn’t have much going for it — except for the simplicity of course. I liked that simplicity to be honest, so while I eventually moved on to another Twitter client, somewhere deep down I was eagerly waiting for an update to Seesmic. This is it, I guess…

If it’s any consolation, I’m an aspiring software developer and would love to continue development of Seesmic for BlackBerry (under a different name of course). So, if anyone at Seesmic is reading this, drop me an e-mail @ yabdullah92@aol.com.

Thank you for the support for as long as it lasted! I still have the Seesmic stickers somewhere — fun stuff.

    Peace,
    Yousif.

Sounds like you couldnt make an effective BlackBerry client, so you are giving up. This is great free publicity though. Hope WP7 can overtake BlackBerry or Seesmic might give up on them too.

I don’t actually. I’m an Android user, I own an HTC Desire. I complaint because I find this move “limiting to Seesmic” if their reasoning would be more realistic then I’d understand, but under the premise of “focusing on our most popular platform” really lets me down. Yes, I’ve been a BlackBerry user, nonetheless I use Android and BlackBerry and this post seems disappointing to me. My opinion. I’m not asking you to step out of Seesmic :).

What an idotic decision purely from a business stand point completely short sighted! Blackberry is growing overseas and is #1 in my country of Trinidad & Tobago which has iPhone and Android available they should never be allowed to make an app for rim again!

  • KateJulia

I can”t believe this. I love this twitter app, it definitely has more features than official twitter app. Blackberry is not dead. This leaves such a sour taste in my mouth and makes me never want to use seesmic on any other phone now. So unfair. I use my BB to tweet, text and read e-mail and now I have to use a twitter app that is not as enjoyable. Bad business in my opinion, throwing loyal clients overboard. I can’t believe how disappointed I am.

  • http://twitter.com/jeffreyrr Jeffrey

I don’t care for either WP7 nor BB, but is your Windows Phone 7 usage really higher then your BlackBerry usage? I mean I know BlackBerry has been on a steep decline, but there has to be at least 3-4x as many BlackBerry devices out there when compared to WP7 devices.

I checked appworld and found the apps you compete with are doing better than you by 100x or more, so i guess that is why you must drop the bb platform. Better to focus in places you can compete well in.

I don’t use Sessmic I prefer the official Twitter App myself (Though I have used Sessmic and liked it a lot.) This decision makes me laugh. RIM doesn’t seem to recognize they’re falling apart. Mainly due to the record number of units sold last quarter. But they’re slowly being chipped away at. 5-year all time stock low, dwindling market share, hardware that is behind the curve (save the Playbook). It seems so obvious on the outside, why can’t RIM get a handle on the situation. Dump BBOS infavour of QNX, open BBM to other platforms, get better phone hardware.

I honestly think a decision like this is easilly made. The developers of course have some way to see how often users of a platform (bb, android, ios, wp7) use the software. If you put out the development costs against those numbers you can make a perfect decision to discontinue development for a platform. It might nog be true that it’s much harder to develop for BBos than any of the other platforms, but it IS much true that the majority of the consumers make use of the other platforms worth developing for. Besides why cry for it if there are many other better and even perfect twitter apps for Blackberry? This pointless discussion brought up by BB users mostly just shows they are ok with just mediocre functionality and features the apps but also the OS delivers. I’d just be glad that there are still viable options to use. Besides… Hasn’t RIM been testing the use of Android apps on BB devices? This makes Seesmic’ decision even more understandable and strategic.

How is BlackBerry obsolete when in the last year, they’ve sold 80 million phones? BlackBerry has ruled for over a decade and just because they are in a temporary decline while they move to a new modern OS, they’re a write-off? Fanboys are a curious species.

  • http://twitter.com/ChocolateSoul Brian Bernard

Liza, this is a bad move. You are alienating MILLIONS OF USERS. This seems like an overreaction to some persistent bad press that the media is self-propagating. Your loyal users should come first! BlackBerry outsold iPhone two or three quarters ago. You are forfeiting access to MILLIONS OF USERS for an app that you already have matured in market. This is a huge slap in the face to BlackBerry users.

  • http://twitter.com/ChocolateSoul Brian Bernard

This is patently false. Any honest observer knows how great QNX is. It is also not very hard to develop for their platform.

  • http://twitter.com/ChocolateSoul Brian Bernard

Customers should ALWAYS be a priority.

Agreed! BlackBerry users are being thrown under the bus. I wonder if they realize that we also own other devices that we can choose not to install Seesmic on?

They just sold over 13 million phones. That sure is dying, fanboy. :/

  • http://twitter.com/ChocolateSoul Brian Bernard

This is a lie. BlackBerry is still number one for business users and they have a huge lead there. It is the consumer space that they are losing the majority of the traction in.

  • Anonymous

Nice – Blackberry is competing, Mr. George. The Playbook is NOT a hail-Mary device designed to save the company. It is the first of a series of new devices that will emply the QNX-based OS .
It is NOT arrogance – the fact of the matter is they were caught by their own success at providing the secure BES, BBM, etc and were growing the business UNLIKE Palm which never I REPEAT NEVER made one cent of profit.

  • Anonymous

That is why Blackberry is moving to QNX. What’s your point then?

Look, do not believe there is a decent business reason to make such a ridiculous public announcement if Seesmic honestly intends on supporting BBerry QNX users in the future through the Android-app friendly BBerries in 2012.

Could they not have indicated this on the announcement?

However, if Seesmic does NOT have such an intention, then it is their prerogative to stop supporting whatever and whenever they wish.

That’s business (though calling Windows Phone 7 a more popular OS is plain silly and is a dishonest statement)

  • http://SocialSteak.com Stephen Robinson

WP7 is more popular in terms of app market growth. Which is most important. Seesmic was seeing a massive decline on blackberry and it kept going down, for whatever reason it doesn’t matter, it’s not a surprise they are moving off the platform.

  • @LizaSperling

People can “reach out” how they like. For some that is email:liza@seesmic.com, for others that is Twitter, FB, phone, etc…I make all this information widely available in hopes of being as accessible as is humanly possible.

  • M_man555

What the hell are you developers thinking really . You want to focus your efforts on more popular platforms . Well at least Rimm isnt the only company these days making dumb dissitions . Very week on your part . Well maybe you will do alright in a market that is already swamped with developers but you probably wont even been seen or maybe your stuff will get riddled with viruses or hacked. oh ya I have the time to rumble though 3 hundred thousand app to find your lol not.

Blackberry has gained popularity but it is too hard and too expensive to develop. Also, the new version of OS from RIM doesn’t look very promising……

seesmic for blackberry was ‘nice and clean’, and easy to use BUT was too damn SLOW! Shame Loic and the seesmic crew supposedly ‘threw in the towel’…

And NO (to, Sslavkaa), I don’t agree that there are masses of users ditching BBs for iPhones etc., because you can’t get anything else as good for emails and or, for free mins like you do for BBs which, are key factors for those like me needing it for both work and socially.

I am happy with my Blackberry and very sad about this. The Android phones in my office have battery issues and freeze up after OS updated and need to be replaced more than necessary.  This is unfortunate.

It’s funny how people say it’s so hard to develop for BlackBerry when both Android and BlackBerry are based on Java. And I don’t hear people saying how difficult it is to develop on Android.

I know that there are obvious differences, but being a developer for both platforms I can assure you that with proper handling, developing for BlackBerry is not such a hard job.
